Creative English Teaching - Pru Por (Pattalung province)

08-21 August 2010

Project: Pru Por is a small Buddhist village with about 100 families of Pa Bon district in Phattalung province, Southern Thailand. The creative English teaching project will be held in a kindergarten and primary government school which is named the same as the village. Most of the villagers work on rubber plantations and rice fields but after work, some of them join the group activities in the village such as Thai massage and making household brooms and fishing materials.

There are about 167 students and 13 teachers. The knowledge of English is quite poor compared to other schools in the city. Most Thai Schools want foreigners to teach English at their school. For Thai children, English language is really difficult. The alphabet and the pronunciation are completely different. You will experience it yourself during your project. With our teaching project, school provides some hours for the volunteers in order to get students motivated and interested in learning English. We stimulate them to enjoy the class, show them that it can be fun and useful to learn English by giving creative lessons (e.g. games and songs) in a relaxing way.

In January of this year 2010, DaLaa organized a two-week work camp, Art & Creative, in the village pre-school and it was completed very successfully. After the work camp finished, the teachers and the villagers commented they would like to host again international and Thai volunteers to their village. A good relationship is ensured and activities will be organized and lead by the villagers.

Aims of work camp:

- To improve and enhance children's English language ability

- To let children be familiar with volunteers and learn in international/multi-cultural atmosphere

- To support the school

- To establish and improve relationship between volunteers and local people

It’s recommended for participants to bring some ideas for group activities to the work camp as you will spend most of your stay with your volunteer friends. Activities can be card games, songs, shows or anything that bring you guys together

Accommodation:You will stay together in a school teacher’s residence. It’s a one-storey wooden house standing on columns lifted from the ground. It will be your sleeping place and resting area: basic, simple living condition. Plus, toilet/bathroom is a really typical Thai style

Fee: 7,000 Baht (about 155 Euro)

Location: Pru Por , Pattalung province, south of Thailand

Meeting point:08th August at Hat Yai train station, 10 o’clock in the morning

Infosheet : If you are interested, ask your organization for a more detailed info sheet of this project.
