1009KIDS 12-25 September 2010 Project: Baan Ma Ngang is a small fishermen’s village with a population of 667 (137 families) and can be connected via its district called La Ngoo by the only main road which is 18 kilometers away and some destinations people can travel through the manmade seawater canal. The village is located on a coastal plain foreland where the canal makes its way through the heart of the village reaching to the Andaman Sea. Almost everyone lives in one corner; the rest of the land is used for agriculture (rice), animal farming (prawn & livestock) and mangrove forest. Fishing is the main career and centre of the economy in this village. The majority of the villagers are fishermen and temporaries. Some families form up their own groups producing seafood process such as dried shrimp-it makes known for its fame throughout the province and is exported abroad. There are only 2 seasons in this village, rainy & dry. Thailand’s climate sometimes is unreliable. It may be sun for the whole morning but rains in the afternoon. September is regarded as one the rainy months so we recommend you NOT to bring any heavy clothes with you. The villagers of Baan Ma Ngang are 60% Islamic and 40% Buddhist. Muslim people do not eat pork nor drink alcohol. Though there are Muslims and Buddhists settling in this village, they all live in harmony. Women should dress modestly although you will discover that the villagers are very relaxed. There is a small school providing kindergarten to primary levels with 73 students (43 boys & 30 girls), aged 3-12 years old respectively, and its name is also called Baan Ma Ngang. Behind the school backyard there’s a large mangrove forest where villagers and students occasionally plant seedlings and hold activities involving in environment.
